“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.”  Exodus 23:20

Reflections: Angels, You and Following

Sometimes we are blind to just how good we have it. The Nation of Israel wasted forty years and their very own lives in the wilderness because they thought they could out smart the Lord.

As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promise Land, the Lord sent Michael to go before them to guarantee success. His role was two-fold. First, Michael would strike terror into the hearts of the inhabitants so that they would fear the Israelites and flee. Second, he would time this in an ordered and progressive way so that the wild animals would not take over the cities before the Israelite arrived to protect them from harm..

If the nation simply trusted the Lord and followed his instructions, they would have success. The angel would guide them, protect them and order the timing of their adventure perfectly. If they simply did their part, God would do the rest and bring them to the destination of their dreams.

Just imagine what that means for you. Not only do you have ministering angels, like Michael, but also you possess the Holy Spirit to guide, teach, encourage, convict and nudge you in the paths the Lord has for you. You are never without a Guide and all the help you need to fulfill your God-given roles and challenges. Never think that you are alone or that success depends on you. The Lord is fully aware of your inabilities and weaknesses and has provided all the help you need. But, here is the catch: Will you pay attention to him and listen?

The Israelites floundered because they got ahead of the Angel with pride and disobedience. They were so consumed with their personal desires and selfishness that they saw God’s plans for them delayed and spoiled. Hindsight is 20/20 but why learn from the rear view mirror. It is easier and more successful to simply get it right the first time through loving trust and obedience.

If you are walking through a path that seems too challenging or difficult, slow down to take a deep spiritual breath of God’s Word to become aware of where the Lord might be leading you. He is out in front and deeply desires to lead you to the place prepared for you and to protect you from evil. He wants you to succeed more that you do so trust him fully, obey what he says and follow well. You will discover that you are merely walking in his footsteps.
